About Us

Our commitment to agriculture and transportation began over 50 years ago when our founder had an idea – there was a better way to trade barge freight by merchandising the tariff rates.

With just three employees in St. Louis, MO, this innovative idea fueled by a strong entrepreneurial spirit led to the creation of Consolidated Grain and Barge Co. (CGB Co.), thereby revolutionizing the barge freight industry.

Over the course of the next several years, CGB Co. continued to grow and expand its business by becoming a grain trading company. In the early 1970s, CGB Co. entered the grain business in a more traditional manner by purchasing property on the Illinois River. Through several more purchases and acquisitions, the once small team became a strong, diverse company with strategic locations throughout Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.

Today, Consolidated Grain and Barge Co. is part of a larger group of companies now belonging to CGB Enterprises, Inc. (CGB). CGB operates over 113 grain facilities with access to barge, rail and/or truck across the Midwest and beyond. In addition to grain facilities, the company has sizable operations in logistics and transportation, agri-finance, soybean processing, producer risk management, and other related businesses. Visit CGB’s website at www.cgb.com to learn more.

Our specialty grains involvement stretches back to the 1990s when GMO crops started to become more popular. Our end use customers desired to maintain a supply chain of NGMO products coming to them for both feed and food use. Since the 1990s, CGB has remained one of the largest exporters of NGMO corn and soybeans in the country.

As the organic movement in the United States started to become more popular, several of our farmer customers asked us to get involved in handling organic grains. We noticed that the organic market was not very transparent and commodities needed to travel several hundred miles by truck to find a market. In the fall of 2020, we introduced our first two facilities to handling organics. As we begin 2023, we now have fifteen facilities certified to handle organics. We are excited to be a part of this industry and look forward to continued growth.
